Returned to Melbourne

Melbourne, Australia

Back to Melbourne for a couple of days after a great week in “Tassie”. We set up base at a cool little hotel/hostel that is the second oldest still standing in town. Apparently Ned Kelly made a stop here a few years ago (prior to his death in 1880 presumably). Ned Kelly was Australia’s most famous bushranger and folk hero from the convict days. And as a bonus, the hotel is haunted….. scary! Our room was right above the pub, so got plenty of live music in for a few days…

On this return visit to Melbourne, we had a fabulous day enjoying the refreshing sunlight. We went for a good 5k run around the Royal Botanic Gardens, and then strolled around the park. It is beautiful and surprizingly free! All I could think was how much Mom would love it here. But she’d probably need a week to explore the whole park. So many plants, so little time.

That evening we went to the monthly Melbourne wine show, and sampled wines from the Bendigo region. This region is proud of their big wines, especially Shiraz, and Shiraz blends. Our favorite was the unreleased 2003 Chaperon Shiraz from the Grange Hill winery. They’re a small organic no-irrigation winery, and unfortunately doesn’t export 🙁
