Yungaburra, QLD, Australia
We traveled all day (ferry and car), to get to the Atherton region by sunset. This part of Australia ( Atherton Tablelands ) is quite different from anywhere else. It’s an elevated hilly plateau (looks like mountains from the coast), and a lot of the forest up there is part of the World Heritage Wet Tropics. The rest of land is farm and grazing lands, which are considered the “the food bowl” of the northern tropics. We hiked around one of the crater lakes, hoping to spot some tree kangaroos, but weren’t so lucky. We did get a close look though at the extent of the tree damage from the recent cyclone.
We were thrilled to spend the night in a quiet, comfortable, guest house ( Kookaburra Lodge ), with scrumptious breakfast served at our patio door. We both got an amazing sleep.
We didn’t have a lot of time left before our flight from Cairns to Darwin, so we only spent 1 night in the Atherton Tablelands.
The drive down to Cairns from the Tablelands was beautiful. The road winded down through lush rainforest, only giving us a taste of what we were in for when we got to the Daintree region.
