Ready for some of the best diving in the world

Staying at the Dragon Inn.
Diving with North Borneo DSS.

We were enjoying Borneo’s nature and wildlife so much, that we delayed our return flight a couple of days. This gave us enough time to hike up Kota Kinabalu, sleep in the rain forest near Sukau, and still be able to dive the world famous sights of Sipidan Island. Unfortunately we only had enough time for 1 day of diving. 2 or 3 days would have been even better, but it was worth the trip even just for the 3 dives we were able to get in.

Sipidan is a 30 minute boat ride from Semporna, which is a 1 hour drive from the Tawau airport. There’s not much to see or do in Semporna nor Tawau other than diving; and the diving is well worth the visit. The visibility of our dives wasn’t as clear as it can be in Sipidan, but that can change from day to day. The previous day had apparently been crystal-clear. But as the tides change, so do the plankton blooms. The highlights of our dives were the massive and abundant marine life. We lost count of white-tipped reef sharks and sea turtles. The massive schools of travelly and barracuda were hypnotizing.

Borneo should definitely be on any nature-lover’s list of places to visit. I’m so glad we went. The friendly hospitable people and delicious fish were a pleasant bonus!
